Merchant Account Fees Breakdown

Discount Rate
The discount rate will typically account for most of your costs associated with credit and debit card processing. The discount rate is the most important fee, so pay very close attention to this particular detail. The discount rate is a percentage charged to you for each transaction processed. If you are swiping your cards through a terminal, your discount rate is usually lower. If you key enter the transaction, or process an internet order the discount rate is typically higher because of the higher level of risk. For example, if you are set up with a discount rate of 2.5%, and you charge your customer $100, the amount discounted would be $2.50.

Transaction Fees
Every transaction processed is charged a fee by the processor. This fee is charged on every single transaction. Whether the transaction is approved or denied, the processor charges a fee. Visa, AMEX, Mastercard, and Discover are all charged a transaction fee. Typically, a charge will be $.20 for swiped transactions, and $.30 for key entered transactions. Wireless transaction fees can be slightly higher.

Debit as Debit Transaction Fees
This applies when you have a PIN pad attached to your terminal, and the card is swiped with the PIN number entered. This fee is set at a fixed rate. A Debit transaction fee is usually around $.70 per item. Some processors charge a lower amount, and then charge you the Debit networking fees which vary.

Address Verification Fee
This fee only applies to merchants who are not swiping their cards. The fee is usually 5-19 cents and is lumped in with the transaction fee. Some processors do charge it as a separate line item. The AVS is a valuable fraud protection tool, and is mandated by VISA and Mastercard for all keyed in transactions.

Visa/Mastercard Tiers
Debit as Debit with PIN entered is the lowest possible risk for the Bank, and will have the lowest fees associated. Offline Debit is a Debit card taken as credit, and the fee slightly goes up. Qualified rate is a pure personal credit card and has a rate reflective of the risk involved. Mid-qualified rate is for rewards cards, frequent flier cards, and cards of that nature. The highest possible rate is the non-qualified rate, this includes Government cards. Remember if a company only tells you about one LOW RATE, they are being disingenuous, and steer clear.

The Importance of an Internet Merchant Account

If you are in business, or are going into business and want to start accepting credit card orders over the Internet, you will need an Internet merchant account. An Internet merchant account is a brilliant piece of technology that will enable you to accept credit/debit cards over the Internet by having your customers enter their card information directly into your website. Having an Internet merchant account will enable you to accept all forms of payment, and creates a great deal of efficiency, because your customers no longer need to phone, fax, or mail in their orders.

Having the capability of accepting credit/debit cards over the Internet is an integral part of any successful 21st century business. The speed and efficiency of the internet is second to none.  It is important to remember that greater speed and efficiency creates wealth through cost reduction, and the internet has had truly remarkable growth; and the Internet has had truly remarkable growth with no definite end in sight. When you accept credit/debit cards over the Internet through your Internet merchant account, the transaction is usually processed in real time. A secure payment gateway processes the transaction in real time, which means the instant your customer checks out, the transaction is processed.

Another important note is that you do not need to use a secure payment gateway to process your transactions. You can use credit card processing software, or a credit card terminal. If you do either of those things, the transaction will not be processed in real time. You will need to enter the numbers in at a later time manually. If you already have a terminal and a merchant account, and you want to accept credit cards taken over the Internet, you will still need an Internet merchant account. The rules governing Internet merchant accounts and merchant accounts are different, so if you are going to accept credit cards over the Internet make sure you have an Internet merchant account.

Four Key Points in a successful E-Commerce Business

In order to run and maintain a successful E-Commerce site, four key areas deserve scrutiny. Your website, your merchant account, your shopping cart, and your secure payment gateway.

Your Website
Your website is your company's face to the world, and deserves a great deal of attention. First, your website must be aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. The longer someone remains on your site the more likely they are to purchase your goods and services. Next, your website must be professional and accurately depict what your business has to offer. The Internet has had explosive growth, and will continue to be a driving force in our world economy, so being an active participant with an eye to detail will greatly benefit your business. The primary goal of an E-Commerce site is to cause your clientele to conclude that purchasing your goods and services has a cost to benefit ratio which will benefit them. Every detail of your E-Commerce site should be devoted to collecting information on prospective clients, and showing them the absolute value of your product. In the end your site should sell itself. Clear and concise descriptions of products listed in an easy to use manner, with pricing visible, are vital. Detailing the benefits of your product is very important. List the features, describe the advantages. The benefits must outweigh the cost, so be sure to have a proper blend of enthusiasm and logic when describing your goods and services. Language, information, and word usage play important roles in the sales procedure, so make sure your prospective clients are well informed about everything you have to offer. Hold onto sales by providing an accurate description of the features and advantages that are associated with your product line. It is also very important to list your company's telephone number. An email address alone for contact information is insufficient and may cause your prospective clients to question customer service.

Another way to demonstrate the superiority of your goods and services is through testimonials. Testimonials are a fantastic way of singing the praises of your company. You could sell your product all day long, and not have the impact of a truthful and well thought out testimonial. Providing your prospective clients with this feedback from other customers is a powerful weapon when building confidence in your company. Testimonials will build trust and lead your prospective client down the road to a sale. Another confidence-builder is the money-back guarantee, and there is no risk for your prospective client. The money you might have to pay out honoring the guarantee is minuscule in comparison to the increase in revenue. Make sure your prospective clients have many opportunities to register with you, or to make a purchase of your goods and services. The ordering process must be easy, your shopping cart and checkout options should be simple to navigate.

Your Merchant Account
Having a merchant account grants you the ability to accept all major credit cards. In the fast-paced world of online business today, credit cards make up 99% of sales, so the necessity of accepting credit cards is obvious. Retain all possible business by accepting every form of payment. Create a thriving online business through your merchant account, by gladly accepting all forms of credit cards. When setting up a merchant account for your online business, make sure you consider everything when choosing a provider. A company's website gives insight into the upkeep of its online business. Make sure your merchant services provider knows what they are doing. This will ensure a productive, win-win situation for you and your provider. You can have a long and fruitful relationship, and eliminate the headaches associated with doing business with unscrupulous merchant service providers.

Your Shopping Cart and Secure Server
If you are accepting credit cards online, you must have shopping cart software installed on your website. You could also have the shopping cart remotely hosted on another server.

A shopping cart on the Internet acts just like a shopping cart in brick and mortar stores, by allowing clients to select items you are offering and place them into their "basket" which totals all purchases, taxes, and shipping rates. The shopping cart then collects the billing, shipping, and payment information through a secure payment gateway. There are a number of shopping carts available today. Some are free, some require a one time payment, and others require a monthly fee. Look around and decide which cart fulfills your needs while meeting your budget requirements. Shopping carts which require registration should be avoided, because the extra step may hurt business. Offer registration, do not require it.

You will need to host the page with the order form on a secure server, or hackers will be able to steal your customers' vital information. You can get a secure server from your ISP, or you can setup your own if you have your own server. To setup a secure server, you would need to purchase a digital certificate from a company like Verisign or Thawte. Typically these certificates cost about $150 per year. Authorize.net is another way to host your order form on a secure server. Authorize.net provides a secure checkout page as part of their service, which will save you the trouble of obtaining your own secure certificate.

Your Payment Gateway
Your payment gateway is the link between your website and the credit card processors. Authorize.net is one example of a payment gateway. Once Authorize.net receives payment information from the secure payment page, the payment gateway sends the information to the credit authorization network. The network verifies the validity of the card, and makes sure the funds are available so the transaction can be cleared.

The payment gateway then issues the result of the transaction. Once the sale is approved an online receipt is issued to the customer by the payment gateway. If the transaction is declined the payment prompts the customer to try another card. A payment gateway is also a wonderful security device, because it reduces the number of fraudulent transactions accepted. The correct billing address and or the proper CVV code must be entered correctly or the transaction will not process. Using these two methods of fraud control, you can reduce your fraudulent transactions by 80%.

All four aspects of your E-Commerce website deserve a great deal of attention and time. Website design, merchant account, shopping cart, and secure payment gateway selection is key to a successful E-Commerce website.

Payment Gateway

An online Internet payment gateway provides a service which allows you to process all credit card transactions taken from your website in real time. This allows the customer to know if their credit card was approved or not.

A shopping cart is a great tool to use before the payment gateway. The shopping cart function allows your customers to select merchandise from your website, and place selected items in the shopping cart. This also allows listing of number, size and color, or any other options. At the point of checkout, the shopping cart totals all items, adds applicable tax and shipping, and takes the customer's shipping and billing information. The payment gateway then captures the credit card transaction, encrypts the transaction data, and routes it to the credit card processor. An approval or decline notice is then issued. This process is seamless. There is no interaction between your customer and the secure payment gateway. The information is forwarded through your shopping cart and a secure connection. An online payment gateway provides three essential services when your customer attempts to make a purchase from your website using a credit card or a debit check card. These include authorization, settling, and reporting.

Authorization
When a purchase is made via credit or debit card through a payment gateway, the card must first be approved by the card issuer. The secure payment gateway checks the acceptability of the card. This allows a secure link between you, the payment gateway, and the credit card processor. It is a very fast and efficient way to process all credit and debit transactions. The average response time is between 2-3 seconds.

Settling
At the end of the business day, the secure payment gateway will group all of your transactions together and send them off to the bank in a single batch. This process transfers the transaction to your bank so you can receive payment. This is called settling. Once the funds are settled, it typically takes two business days for the funds to be electronically deposited into your account.

Reporting
The secure payment gateway makes a record of all your transactions, which allows you to view them through the payment gateway report facilities. From there, you can review them, print them, or download them to your computer for further accounting and processing. Many payment gateways are compatible with PC applications.

Additional Benefits
Secure payment gateways also offer a virtual terminal. With this terminal, you can enter all the credit card information you received from methods other than your website. This is a very helpful tool, because you can accept orders from anywhere, like the phone, or E-mail. Many payment gateways offer an SSL checkout page. This will save you $150 per year because you won't need your own certificate. Good Internet payment gateways offer 24 hour E-mail customer service. When deciding which gateway to use, make sure they have an uptime of 99.9%, and a support team capable of getting the servers up online within 24 hours, 7 days per week. Anything less than that is utterly unacceptable. The growth potential of the secure payment gateway should be reviewed. The gateway should be able to handle the growth in your business, by being able to expand and grow itself. Verify the scalability of the payment gateway. Make sure the gateway is able to be integrated with all the new technology, including, but not limited to, recurring billing, transaction upload, and download capabilities.

Conclusion
A secure payment gateway is a useful tool, and has many applications to business. A secure payment gateway is your connection to the processor, so it must be considered very carefully. When deciding whether or not a secure payment gateway will work for you, review the above article. Becoming informed about a secure payment gateway will benefit you and your business.
